The U.S.-Africa Trade Commission has appointed Dr. Fakunle John Aremu as its Country Director for Nigeria, with a mandate to strengthen trade, investment and economic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
Aremu’s appointment was contained in a letter dated July 10, 2026, and signed by the Commission’s Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Titus Olowokere.
As part of the appointment, Aremu was also named a member of the Commission’s Executive Committee, where he is expected to contribute to the organisation’s broader trade, investment and economic development agenda across Africa.
The Commission said Aremu will represent it in Nigeria and engage with government agencies, diplomatic missions, investors, businesses, universities, chambers of commerce and development partners.
His responsibilities will include promoting bilateral trade, investment, tourism, innovation and economic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
He will also identify and facilitate investment opportunities, business transactions, joint ventures and public-private partnerships, while building strategic relationships with key institutions and stakeholders.
The appointment further tasks Aremu with leading membership recruitment, mobilising sponsorships and donor funding, organising trade missions and business forums, and providing periodic reports on partnerships, investment pipelines, membership growth and fundraising activities.
Aremu brings more than 15 years of experience in international trade, investment and economic development across Africa.
His experience includes engagement with governments, international development institutions and private-sector stakeholders, positioning him to connect investors and businesses with investment opportunities in Nigeria and facilitate partnerships with international counterparts.
The Commission said his role would focus on strengthening U.S.-Nigeria commercial relations and creating opportunities capable of delivering measurable economic outcomes.
As Country Director, Aremu is expected to play a key role in advancing the Commission’s efforts to deepen bilateral trade and investment ties, support business partnerships and promote Nigeria as a destination for international investment.
