Across Britain, the rising cost of raising children continues to influence household finances, employment decisions and the ability of parents to balance work with family responsibilities. Affordable childcare remains particularly important for working families, including those managing school holidays alongside demanding employment schedules.
With the October half-term approaching, fresh government figures highlight how financial support for childcare is helping hundreds of thousands of households reduce expenses while remaining economically active.
According to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), 601,620 families benefited from Tax-Free Childcare in June 2026, receiving a combined £55.7 million in government contributions.
The figures, highlighted in an announcement on 13 October, show that families received an average government top-up of £93 during the month.
Under the scheme, eligible working parents receive £2 from the government for every £8 deposited into a Tax-Free Childcare account.
This allows families to save up to £2,000 annually for each eligible child, rising to £4,000 for children with disabilities.

“Paying for childcare while you work doesn’t have to be a nightmare for your bank balance this Hallowe’en. Tax-Free Childcare can make a real difference. Go to GOV.UK to find out more today.”
The scheme covers approved childcare services, including nurseries, after-school clubs and holiday activity programmes.
To qualify, parents generally must meet minimum earnings requirements, with neither parent earning more than £100,000 annually. Families receiving Universal Credit or childcare vouchers cannot use the scheme.
Eligible children are generally covered until September following their 11th birthday, with extended support for children with disabilities until September following their 16th birthday.
Parents can receive government contributions of up to £500 every three months per eligible child, or £1,000 for a child with disabilities.
For Britain’s diverse communities, including African and Caribbean households, awareness of available childcare support can be particularly valuable for families balancing employment, education and household responsibilities.
Beyond immediate savings, accessible childcare can support workforce participation, especially among parents whose employment opportunities depend on reliable childcare arrangements.
Families can check eligibility and register through the official [GOV.UK Tax-Free Childcare service](https://www.gov.uk/tax-free-childcare).
