An international investigative report has drawn attention to an alleged online romance and investment fraud scheme said to have cost a Romanian businesswoman more millions.
In early February 2026, an investigation titled “How We Tracked a ‘Fake Prince’ Scammer to His Nigerian Mansion” was published by the (OCCRP). The report detailed how a woman identified as Laura was allegedly contacted via LinkedIn by an individual claiming to be the Crown Prince of Dubai. Over time, the interaction reportedly evolved into what investigators described as both a romantic relationship and a purported investment arrangement.
According to the report, the alleged impostor encouraged significant financial transfers under the guise of unlocking access to funds. Investigators stated that they traced the digital footprint of the so-called “Dubai prince” to Nigeria, linking the operation to what was described as a coordinated network involving manipulated online banking interfaces and multiple actors.
Following the publication, Dr Martins Abhulimhen, whose name appeared in the investigation as one of the individuals referenced in connection with the wider network, issued a formal clarification to BEN TV.
In his statement, Dr Abhulimhen explained that he is a Nigerian citizen and legal resident of the United Kingdom with more than two decades of humanitarian and advocacy experience. He stated that in 2023 he provided consultancy advisory services relating to a proposed property investment in London, for which a professional fee was paid into his UK bank account in his legal name.
He maintained that the engagement was strictly limited to consultancy work. In 2024, he said UK authorities contacted him regarding a review of the transaction. According to Dr Abhulimhen, he cooperated fully, voluntarily attended an interview, provided all requested documentation, and no criminal proceedings were brought against him.
He further emphasised that he was not involved in any alleged wider scheme referenced in the reporting and has never conducted business under any identity other than his legal name. He added that his interactions with various officials and stakeholders over the years stem from his advocacy and professional activities and should not be interpreted as unrelated business partnerships.
Dr Abhulimhen reaffirmed his commitment to lawful conduct, transparency and service.
At the time of publication, there is no public record indicating that he faces criminal charges in connection with the reported matter.
BEN TV will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as verified information becomes available.
