In the heart of Nigeria’s evolving cultural landscape, one figure stands as both architect and alchemist of theatrical transformation — Olateju Wasee Kareem. A man whose name has become synonymous with innovation, artistry, and technical excellence, Teju Kareem is not merely a practitioner of theatre design and technology but its foremost pioneer in Nigeria. Through his company, Zmirage Multimedia Limited, he has lifted the country’s performing arts sector from the constraints of outdated infrastructure into the radiant dawn of twenty-first-century theatre technology.
Kareem’s journey is one marked by resilience, vision, and a refusal to be bound by limitation. His story unfolds in three distinct phases, each laying the foundation for his present standing as a global authority. First, at the University of Ibadan, he immersed himself in scenography and lighting design, discovering how space, texture, and light could be transformed into powerful instruments of storytelling. Those formative years cultivated in him a profound respect for the symbiosis of art and science within theatre.
The second phase took him beyond Nigeria’s shores to Lagos and eventually the United Kingdom, where he absorbed international standards of stagecraft and business administration. The exposure honed his skills and broadened his horizon, demonstrating that true mastery lay not only in artistry but in efficiency, organisation, and the courage to innovate.

The third and defining chapter came in 1997 when Kareem returned to Nigeria, armed with automated entertainment technology systems that were virtually unknown in the country at the time. From computerised lighting rigs to advanced stage mechanics, he revolutionised performance possibilities. Productions once constrained by technical limitations suddenly found new wings, and Nigerian theatre began to speak with a global accent without losing its African soul.
Through Zmirage, Kareem has consistently bridged the gap between tradition and innovation. His work weaves light, sound, and multimedia into immersive experiences that do more than entertain — they inspire, provoke, and elevate cultural dialogue. Productions such as Kongi’s Harvest and The Beatification of Area Boy bear his distinctive stamp: an ability to merge realism with symbolism, while always respecting the audience’s engagement with story. His technical ingenuity has also extended to international collaborations and touring productions, proving that African stories, when supported by world-class technology, can hold their own on any global stage.
Beyond the stage, Kareem is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and cultural advocate. His leadership of the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE) underscores his commitment to youth empowerment and international collaboration. By integrating digital storytelling and virtual participation, he is ensuring that the next generation not only inherits a vibrant theatre tradition but also shapes it with modern tools and ideas.
His calibre has been recognised with numerous honours, including being conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) in Public Administration. In his acceptance speech to the Nigerian Academy of Letters, Kareem reflected with characteristic humility: “My work has often taken place behind the stage — in silence, with steadfast commitment and quiet dignity.” Yet his influence, though often backstage, reverberates loudly in Nigeria’s cultural consciousness.
Despite the challenges facing Nigeria’s creative industry — inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, and insufficient training opportunities — Kareem remains optimistic. He points to the ingenuity of younger scenographers who think globally while working locally, often improvising with limited resources to achieve remarkable results. His advice to aspiring practitioners is both practical and profound: marry creativity with business acumen, remain committed to lifelong learning, and embrace collaboration as the heartbeat of successful scenography.
Equally, Kareem is vocal about inclusivity in the field. He acknowledges the historical gender imbalance in technical theatre but champions the emerging wave of women excelling in lighting design, set construction, and multimedia stagecraft. “Talent has no gender,” he insists, advocating for mentorship programmes, scholarships, and opportunities that encourage greater diversity and richer creative expression.
The calibre of Kareem’s contributions has not gone unnoticed. Honours such as the recognition by the Society of Nigeria Theatre Artists (SONTA) affirm his standing as a leader in his field. Looking ahead, he envisions a Nigerian scenographic space that not only adapts global ideas but exports uniquely African design concepts to the world. With better-equipped theatres, stronger industry–academia partnerships, and sustained investment, he believes Nigeria is poised to lead in creative stagecraft.
It is in this context that Zmirage Multimedia Limited stands unrivalled. For any occasion — from showcasing products and services, to staging large-scale concerts, to designing political campaigns that demand world-class staging — Zmirage offers international-quality solutions that blend precision technology with cultural artistry. Simply put, if one seeks a stage that inspires, persuades, and dazzles, Zmirage remains the ultimate partner.
For Teju Kareem, the stage is more than a place of performance. It is a canvas of possibility, a bridge between tradition and innovation, and a testament to what can be achieved when vision meets action. From Ibadan classrooms to global stages, from revolving sets to digital projections, his journey continues to redefine what Nigerian theatre can be — luminous, limitless, and enduring.
