The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has announced that the Executive Bill for the establishment of state police will be presented to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing system.

Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after the committee’s inaugural meeting.

President Tinubu had in July inaugurated the committee to develop the legal framework for the implementation of state police across the country.

Gbajabiamila said the presentation of the Executive Bill to the President would be followed by a nationwide consultation on the completed draft before it is transmitted to the National Assembly.

He said the committee had also invited memoranda, position papers and practical recommendations from stakeholders to enrich the proposed legislation.

According to him, the public consultation will provide Nigerians with an opportunity to scrutinise and make inputs on the draft’s provisions, including safeguards, funding mechanisms and transition arrangements.

“The approved work programme is a seven-week, milestone-driven exercise running from July 27 to September 14, 2026.

“The resulting Executive Bill package is scheduled for presentation to the President on September 3.

“Subject to his approval, a national consultation on the completed draft will follow, after which the text and supporting materials will be revised and prepared for formal transmission to the National Assembly.

“The timetable is demanding, but it is not a shortcut,” Gbajabiamila said.

The proposed legislation is expected to provide the legal foundation for the creation and operation of state police, a longstanding constitutional reform aimed at strengthening internal security and improving community policing across Nigeria.
