President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to formally receive the All Progressives Congress (APC) certificate of return and the party’s flag as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election on Sunday, in what party officials describe as the culmination of its nationwide primary process.
According to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the presentation ceremony will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja following the collation of results from the ruling party’s presidential primary election.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Sunday receive the certificate and flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections,” Onanuga said.
The event is expected to draw senior APC figures, governors, lawmakers, ministers, party delegates and supporters from across the country, signalling the formal beginning of Tinubu’s re-election campaign machinery nearly two years before Nigerians return to the polls.
Tinubu Seeking Second Term
Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023 after winning a fiercely contested presidential election, is seeking a second four-year term amid ongoing economic reforms that have reshaped Nigeria’s fiscal and monetary landscape.
Since taking office, his administration has implemented several major policy decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange-rate liberalisation and tax reform measures aimed at stabilising public finances and attracting foreign investment. The reforms, however, have also contributed to soaring inflation, rising food prices and mounting pressure on household incomes.
The government has defended the policies as necessary structural adjustments designed to prevent long-term economic collapse and reduce dependence on borrowing.
APC Moves to Consolidate Power
The APC’s early endorsement of Tinubu reflects the party’s effort to consolidate internal unity and avoid the divisive nomination battles that have previously weakened ruling parties ahead of national elections.
Tinubu remains the dominant figure within the APC, maintaining strong influence across party structures and among many state governors and lawmakers. In recent months, several APC stakeholders and governors had publicly endorsed him for a second term, arguing that continuity is needed to sustain ongoing reforms and infrastructure projects.
Political analysts say the early confirmation of Tinubu’s candidacy is also intended to discourage internal challengers and allow the party to focus on rebuilding support in regions where voter dissatisfaction over economic hardship has grown.
Opposition Preparing for 2027 Contest
The 2027 election is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most closely watched political contests since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
Opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), are still navigating internal divisions and leadership disputes following the 2023 election cycle. However, both parties are expected to mount strong campaigns centred on the rising cost of living, insecurity and unemployment.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not yet released the official timetable for the 2027 elections, but political mobilisation across major parties has already intensified.
Growing Scrutiny Over Governance Record
Tinubu’s administration continues to face scrutiny over insecurity, foreign exchange volatility and the broader social impact of its economic reforms. Labour unions have repeatedly organised protests over inflation and energy costs, while civil society groups have urged the government to expand social protection programmes.
At the same time, the presidency has pointed to infrastructure investments, increased state revenues and renewed investor confidence as evidence that the reforms are beginning to yield results.
Sunday’s ceremony is likely to serve not only as a party event but also as an early political show of strength for the ruling APC as Nigeria gradually enters another election cycle.
