The Supreme Court of Nigeria has invalidated the convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, Ibadan, bringing a decisive end to the protracted leadership crisis within the party.
In a split 3-2 judgement delivered by a five-member panel, the apex court upheld earlier rulings of the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, which had declared the November 2025 convention illegal. Delivering the lead judgement, Justice Stephen Adah ruled that the exercise was conducted in clear disobedience of subsisting court orders.
The disputed convention had produced former minister Kabir Turaki as a rival national chairman, alongside other members of a parallel National Working Committee.
The Turaki-led faction had approached the apex court to challenge the March 9, 2026 judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which affirmed the earlier decision of the Federal High Court nullifying the convention and restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising its outcomes.
However, the Supreme Court, in its final ruling, dismissed the appeal, effectively affirming that the Ibadan convention and its resolutions remain null and void.
The judgement is widely seen as a major victory for the faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The Wike-backed group had earlier held a separate convention in March, where Abdulrahman Mohammed and other members of the National Working Committee were re-elected.
With the apex court’s decision, the legal battle over the party’s leadership appears conclusively settled, paving the way for a unified structure within the PDP.
