Dear Prime Minister,
Following the 75th anniversary of Windrush, it is crucial we do not lose sight of the members of the Windrush generation who are still waiting for justice. As this generation grows older, time is running out for the government to ensure we do right by them and
right this historic wrong.
I am calling on the government to implement crucial improvements to the Windrush compensation scheme to ensure swift access to justice. The first key step to make this happen is to take the scheme away from the Home Office.
The Home Office has lost the trust and confidence of the Windrush generation, and an independent process is needed
to speed up the delivery of compensation.
I add my voice to longstanding campaigners calling for swifter justice for the Windrush generation who have been victims of the Tory hostile environment, most recently the
#Justice4Windrush campaign.
We know the Windrush generation, who have worked in Britain their entire adult lives, are still struggling to access the housing, healthcare and pensions they are entitled to.

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
The government must reduce the burden of proof on claimants to ease the application process. The compensation scheme award should account for losses to private pensions and future earnings. In recognition of the intergenerational impact of the scandal, compensation should be inherited if the recipient has passed away. Due to the demonstrated complexity of cases, applicants should have access legal aid to support
their application process.
Although there is still more to do, your response to the Post Office scandal has been an example of how quickly the government can respond to correct injustices. Unfortunately, the lack of progress on ending the Windrush scandal displays a lack of will on the
government’s part to show up for the Windrush generation. Now is the time to put that right.
If emergency legislation can be used, which I fully support, to exonerate the Post Office victims and payments brought forward, there is no excuse for not using parliamentary time to ensure the Windrush generation get full and swift justice as outlined above.
It is imperative for those in power to champion the rights of communities who migrate to this country and enrich our communities in every way. As the Mayor of London, I will continue to fight alongside the community to access the justice and support they are entitled to.
Yours sincerely,
Sadiq Khan
Mayor of London
