Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican has confirmed. He passed away peacefully at 07:35 local time on Easter Monday, just a day after he appeared in St Peter’s Square to offer Easter blessings to thousands of worshippers.
World leaders and religious figures across the globe have expressed deep sorrow, paying tribute to a man widely revered for his humility, warmth, and dedication to peace. French President Emmanuel Macron described him as “a man of humility,” while others remembered his “contagious smile” and “boundless compassion.”
Pope Francis had been recently discharged from the hospital after undergoing five weeks of treatment for an infection, but remained visibly active until the eve of his death. His unexpected passing has left millions mourning a spiritual leader who championed inclusivity, justice, and care for the marginalized.
His legacy will be remembered for transforming the image of the Papacy, embracing simplicity, and forging dialogue across religious and cultural boundaries.
