Retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday staged a protest at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, demanding an end to their participation in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which they say has worsened their post-service welfare.
The protesters, operating under the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria (PROF), blocked one of the villa’s gates as they pressed for presidential assent to the Police Exit Bill—a piece of legislation they believe will remove police personnel from the CPS.
The retirees described the pension scheme in strong terms, calling it “fraudulent, illegal, inhumane, and obnoxious,” and urged Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sign the bill into law without further delay.
According to the group, the National Assembly passed the bill on December 4, 2025, and forwarded it to the Presidency on March 16, 2026. If signed, the legislation would formally exclude police personnel from the contributory pension framework.
Speaking during the protest, National Coordinator of PROF, CSP Raphael Irowainu (retd.), said the demonstration was solely to push for executive action on the bill.
He argued that while several other security agencies have already been removed from the CPS, police retirees continue to remain under the scheme, a situation he described as unjust.
The retirees further maintained that the CPS has had a detrimental impact on their livelihoods, alleging that it has subjected many former officers to financial hardship and poor living conditions.
Monday’s protest adds to a series of demonstrations by retired police personnel. In July 2025, a similar protest was held at the National Assembly, where participants also demanded their exit from the scheme.
Some of the elderly demonstrators had previously taken their grievances to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, citing what they described as inadequate pension benefits under the CPS.
