A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with its national convention as scheduled, despite ongoing internal disputes and legal concerns raised by opposing groups within the party.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, the factional National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC), through its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, said preparations for the convention had been completed and the exercise would go on as planned.
Mohammed described the convention as a significant event that would reaffirm the party’s commitment to democratic principles, due process, and the collective will of its members.
He stated that the committee had put in place measures to ensure the convention is credible, transparent, inclusive, and reflective of the aspirations of party members across the country.
According to him, all logistical and administrative arrangements have been concluded to guarantee a smooth, peaceful, and successful convention.
He also maintained that the planned convention fully complies with the party’s constitution and relevant laws, stressing that the PDP remains a law-abiding institution committed to strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
Mohammed dismissed reports suggesting that the convention would not hold, describing such claims as fabrications spread on social media to create confusion and tension within the party. He urged delegates, stakeholders, and party members to remain calm, orderly, and peaceful throughout the exercise.
He further addressed recent internal disagreements within the party, noting that while reconciliation efforts were ongoing and the door remained open for aggrieved members, the committee would not allow any attempt to disrupt the convention or undermine the party’s stability.
The PDP spokesman also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his support in providing a conducive environment for the convention to take place in Abuja.
Responding to questions from journalists, Mohammed said the committee was not aware of any court appeal or injunction filed by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction, adding that the committee had not been officially served with any legal documents.
He also distinguished the planned convention from the Ibadan gathering organised by another faction, which he said lacked legal backing and had been restricted by a court order.
Mohammed added that the NCWC faction enjoys broad support from key party stakeholders, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, as well as several senators and members of the National Assembly.
He noted that while some members may disagree with the current direction of the party, they have the constitutional right to hold differing views.
The PDP national convention is scheduled to hold on Sunday and Monday at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola International Stadium in Abuja.
