Fresh political realignments may be underway ahead of the 2027 general elections following a recent meeting between Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in Kano State during the Sallah celebration.
The meeting, confirmed by the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has intensified speculation about a possible political alliance between the two opposition figures whose separate presidential bids in 2023 divided opposition votes.
Tanko disclosed that the discussion centered on collaboration and building a political coalition aimed at repositioning Nigeria ahead of the next general elections.
Renewed Talks After Failed 2023 Alliance
Political observers say the Kano meeting reflects renewed efforts to revive alliance discussions that collapsed ahead of the 2023 presidential election. At the time, negotiations between both camps reportedly failed due to disagreements over power-sharing arrangements, party structure, and the presidential ticket.
Both Obi and Kwankwaso eventually contested separately under the Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) respectively, a development analysts believe split opposition votes and contributed to the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Since the election, political analysts and supporters of both politicians have repeatedly argued that a united front could have significantly altered the election outcome.
Obasanjo Reportedly Leading Coalition Push
Meanwhile, fresh revelations indicate that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is reportedly leading efforts to unite major opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to political analyst Sumner Sambo, a committee allegedly set up around December initiated discussions involving Obi and Kwankwaso as part of broader coalition talks.
The proposed coalition, according to Sambo, may also involve key opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi in a move aimed at forming a formidable opposition bloc capable of challenging the ruling APC in 2027.
He noted that political stakeholders in Kano are already mounting pressure on Kwankwaso to reconsider joining a broader opposition alliance.
Nigerians Showing Support for Possible Alliance
Also speaking on the development, the National Legal Adviser of the NNPP, Magaji Mato, said many Nigerians are increasingly calling for a political alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso.
According to him, both politicians represent a younger generation of leadership compared to traditional political figures and have built strong grassroots support bases across different regions of the country.
He added that public reaction to Obi’s recent visit to Kano has been largely positive, with many Nigerians expressing hope that a coalition could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
Alliance Talks Gaining Momentum
Tanko also confirmed that discussions between both camps have been ongoing since after the 2023 elections and are now beginning to gain momentum.
He explained that the objective is to build a broad-based political coalition that may extend beyond the two politicians to include other political stakeholders across the country.
According to him, a collaboration between the Obidient Movement and the Kwankwasiyya Movement could significantly strengthen opposition politics and improve electoral chances in the next election cycle.
Analysts Describe Meeting as Turning Point
Political analysts say the Kano meeting could represent a major turning point for Nigeria’s opposition politics, especially amid concerns about weakening opposition parties and increasing political defections to the ruling party.
Public affairs analyst Nduka Odo described the meeting as a crucial moment that could determine the strength of opposition politics ahead of 2027, warning that without unity among opposition leaders, the ruling party may remain dominant.
He noted that the success of any alliance would depend on the willingness of political actors to set aside personal ambition and build a united political structure capable of challenging the incumbent government.
Political Realignments Ahead of 2027
With consultations reportedly ongoing and political alignments gradually taking shape, observers believe the meeting between Obi and Kwankwaso may be the early sign of a broader opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
If successful, analysts say such an alliance could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape and produce one of the most competitive presidential elections in the country’s recent history.
