The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in the fight against money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crimes through enhanced intelligence sharing and joint operations.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NFIU, Hajia Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Bakari described the partnership between both agencies as critical to Nigeria’s security architecture, noting that the country’s 2027 Mutual Evaluation would assess how effectively the police use NFIU intelligence to investigate financial crimes and secure convictions.
She commended the Inspector-General for approving a joint stock-taking exercise between the two institutions and called for the expansion of Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) awareness programmes across police commands nationwide.
Bakari also stressed the need to institutionalise excellence in combating financial crimes and reaffirmed the NFIU’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force through intelligence sharing and capacity building.
Responding, the Inspector-General of Police described the partnership as vital to tackling money laundering, terrorism financing, banditry and other forms of transnational organised crime.
He urged the NFIU to sustain specialised training for police personnel while providing continuous access to actionable financial intelligence and modern investigative tools to strengthen investigations and improve conviction rates.
Both agencies pledged to deepen cooperation as part of efforts to enhance Nigeria’s capacity to detect, investigate and prosecute financial crimes.
