NOTAP, NUJ FCT Partner to Commercialise Research, Drive Innovation and Boost Revenue

The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) has strengthened its commitment to transforming research findings from Nigerian institutions into commercially viable products through strategic partnerships, investor connections and funding opportunities.

Director-General of NOTAP, Dr Obiageli Amadiobi, disclosed this when she received the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, during a courtesy visit to the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between both organisations to promote indigenous innovation, technology transfer and greater awareness of intellectual property rights.

Amadiobi announced that NOTAP would host the National Technology and Innovation Summit in Lagos on October 7 and 8, 2026, with researchers, innovators, manufacturers, financial institutions, investors and the Bank of Industry expected to participate.

She said the summit would provide a platform for researchers to connect with investors and industry players, enabling locally developed technologies to secure funding, enter the marketplace and contribute to economic growth.

According to her, the initiative aligns with NOTAP’s mandate of promoting technology acquisition, supporting indigenous innovation and ensuring that research outputs are converted into products and services capable of creating jobs, improving competitiveness and increasing national revenue.

The NOTAP director-general stressed the importance of media support in advancing science, technology and innovation, noting that accurate reporting would help accelerate Nigeria’s technological development.

She explained that the agency plays a key role in adapting foreign technologies to local needs while developing domestic capacity to understand, improve and sustain imported technologies.

Amadiobi added that NOTAP plans to extend the success recorded in Nigeria’s ICT sector to manufacturing, engineering and other strategic industries through technology transfer, skills development and increased local participation.

She also revealed that the agency is developing a technology and innovation hub where emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), will be demonstrated to improve access to technology education.

The agency, she said, is working with technology firms such as Huawei, MTN and Airtel to strengthen staff capacity and improve Nigeria’s ability to assess and adapt imported technologies.

Earlier, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, described NOTAP as a critical institution in Nigeria’s technology transformation efforts through its work in technology acquisition, transfer, intellectual property protection and promotion of indigenous innovation.

She said stronger collaboration between innovation-focused institutions and communication platforms would be essential to achieving sustainable national development.

“The future of Nigeria depends on strong partnerships between institutions that inform, innovate and inspire. NOTAP stands at the very heart of Nigeria’s technological progress,” Ike said.

She noted that the media had a responsibility not only to report technological breakthroughs but also to explain, promote and connect innovations with the wider public.

Ike said the NUJ FCT Council’s visit was aimed at establishing a partnership with NOTAP in public enlightenment, innovation advocacy, capacity building and national development.

She proposed regular training programmes for journalists covering science, technology and innovation to improve reporting on intellectual property, technology transfer, research commercialisation and innovation policies.

She also called for joint awareness campaigns on patents, intellectual property rights and technology transfer targeted at inventors, researchers, startups and technology developers, describing public education as vital to building an innovation-driven economy.
