Photography has become one of the most powerful tools for promoting destinations, preserving cultural heritage and shaping how nations are perceived across the world. Beyond capturing beautiful landscapes, a photograph can tell a country’s story, showcase its identity, attract visitors and create a lasting connection between people and places. In an increasingly competitive global tourism industry, visual storytelling has become an important instrument of destination marketing and cultural diplomacy.

Dayo Adedayo
It is against this backdrop that Nigerian photographer Dayo Adedayo has earned continental recognition, emerging as Africa’s Best Tourism Photographer of the Year 2026 at the African Tourism Awards held in London.

The award represents a significant milestone in a career spanning more than four decades behind the camera, during which Adedayo has dedicated himself to documenting Nigeria’s breathtaking landscapes, diverse cultures, traditions and extraordinary heritage.
His recognition is not simply a personal achievement. It highlights the important contribution of photography and visual storytelling to Africa’s tourism development, particularly at a time when countries across the continent are seeking to strengthen their international appeal, attract investment and showcase their cultural and natural assets.
For Nigeria, a country blessed with remarkable geographical diversity, historical landmarks, festivals, wildlife, architecture and vibrant communities, the importance of telling its story through compelling images cannot be overstated. The right photograph can introduce a destination to millions of potential visitors before they ever make the journey.
Expressing his gratitude following the announcement, Adedayo described the honour as a victory for Nigeria and African tourism, acknowledging God, his family, friends, supporters and everyone who believed in him and voted for his recognition.
His words, “To God be the glory! I did it!”, reflected the emotion behind an achievement built on decades of dedication, creativity and passion.
As Africa continues to position tourism as a driver of economic growth, cultural exchange and international engagement, Adedayo’s achievement offers another reminder that those who document and promote the continent’s beauty are also contributing to its global story.
Commenting on the achievements, Mentoring Commandant said of Mr Adedayo, “It is long overdue. A worthy ambassador for Nigeria for decades before today’s latest available means. Congratulations 🎊”.
Congratulations to Dayo Adedayo. Proudly Nigerian, and a worthy ambassador of Africa’s visual heritage.
