Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant shift in military culture, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has announced that the Nigerian Armed Forces will no longer focus solely on punitive measures for officers and soldiers but will actively recognize and reward outstanding performance and dedication.
General Musa made this declaration during the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Social and Award Evening held in Abuja on Sunday. This landmark event marked a turning point in how the military honors its personnel, with exceptional Soldiers, Ratings, and Airmen receiving recognition for their commitment, gallantry, and resilience.
Addressing the gathering, the CDS emphasized the importance of appreciating the sacrifices made by military personnel, especially those serving in demanding and dangerous environments.

“I want to tell you we appreciate everything you are doing, all the sacrifices, leaving your families behind, staying in the trenches, and doing so many wonderful things,” he stated.
“Most times, we don’t tell you thank you enough, but this is one way of saying thank you. To whom much is given, much is expected.”
General Musa announced a balanced approach to leadership within the military, ensuring that while discipline is maintained, excellence and dedication are equally rewarded.
As part of this new initiative, award recipients were honored with certificates of commendation, monetary rewards of ₦1 million each, and recommendations for promotion when due.
In a further symbolic move, General Musa revealed that the event’s name would officially change from Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. This change is intended to honor not only fallen heroes but also the active personnel who continue to serve the nation with unwavering commitment.
Commending the bravery and professionalism of the awardees, General Musa charged them to remain focused and dedicated to their duties:
“Your exceptional courage and dedication embody the very essence of soldiering. Our great nation is indebted to your service, loyalty, and legacy.”
The CDS also expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast leadership and consistent support for the Nigerian Armed Forces. He highlighted the critical need for unity among the various military services to effectively address the country’s security challenges.
The historic award evening featured several categories, including the Commendation Award, Defence Research Award, and Defence Valour Medal, symbolizing a new era in the Nigerian military’s recognition and celebration of its personnel.
This initiative reflects the military’s renewed commitment to fostering a motivated, professional, and resilient force dedicated to the protection and advancement of Nigeria.
