Senator Ambassador Ita Solomon Enang, LLD, OFR, has formally presented his Letters of Credence to the Federal President of Germany, His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at the Presidential Palace in Berlin, marking the beginning of his diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany.

Expressing his gratitude, Ambassador Enang said: “Let me express my immense gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the honour and indeed privilege of appointing me as an Ambassador, designating me to Germany.”

The solemn ceremony, conducted in established diplomatic tradition, included a welcome parade by the German military, the signing of the Accreditation Register at the Presidency and the formal presentation of Credentials to the Federal President.

President Steinmeier subsequently received Ambassador Enang for bilateral discussions. He expressed his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commending the excellent relations between Nigeria and Germany and recalling their State visits and frequent meetings on the sidelines of multilateral fora. He also acknowledged the expeditious processing of the designated incoming German Ambassador to Nigeria, who will replace the re-designated incumbent.

Discussions centred on strengthening economic relations, particularly in the power sector, off-grid technology and Siemens power projects; agriculture and food; citizen diplomacy; migration and consular matters. Particular attention was given to opportunities for skilled Nigerians in medicine, technology, IT, AI, crafts and other sectors of the German economy through a formal Nigeria-Germany migration agreement to be negotiated.

The Ambassador also discussed Nigeria’s leadership role in ECOWAS and the need to encourage countries currently outside the regional forum, including Sahelian states, to return, given the security advantages of coordinated State-to-State and regional cooperation.

Both sides considered opportunities for German automobile manufacturers to establish assembly plants in Nigeria, enabling vehicles, trucks and machinery to be assembled locally rather than imported fully assembled, while building Nigerian capacity and promoting technology transfer.

Germany’s guarantor role in the Green Tree Agreement following the International Court of Justice judgment on the Nigeria-Cameroon land and maritime boundary, including Bakassi, was also discussed, particularly the humanitarian consequences of boundary demarcation and population displacement in both countries.

The interest of German firms in capturing gas currently being flared in the Niger Delta and other fields for electricity generation was discussed, alongside opportunities for Nigerian oil and gas to contribute to the German economy.

Ambassador Enang expressed the Federal Government’s appreciation for the humanitarian assistance donated to Nigeria and conveyed by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul during his courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, on July 22, 2026.

While acknowledging the gains from previous visits and the cordial personal relationship between President Tinubu and President Steinmeier, the need for further reciprocal State-to-State visits between the two countries was emphasised.

Other country-specific matters were also discussed during the audience, which was attended by designated Federal Ministers and other senior members of the German Federal Government.

The engagement concluded with the exchange of memorabilia involving officials of the German Federal Foreign Office and the Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Nigerian Mission in Berlin and members of the delegation.

Ambassador Enang was accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission, Ambassador Bashir; Head of Chancery, H.E. Dr (Mrs) Chioma Haidara; his wife, H.E. Dr (Mrs) Rosemary Ita Enang; his son, Mr Charles Ita Enang; and his daughter, Engr. Dr Roses Ita Enang, to whom he expressed his immense gratitude.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, a detachment of the German military mounted a Guard of Honour for the Nigerian Ambassador, while the Green-White-Green flag of Nigeria was simultaneously hoisted at the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Germany.
