Since Nigeria’s independence, the nation has experienced a blend of leadership models – from the discipline of military regimes to the promises of civilian democracy. Across the decades, citizens have endured both challenges and opportunities in equal measure. It remains difficult to determine which style of leadership truly served the people better, yet globally, democracy stands as the most recognised and practised system. Ironically, a few non-democratic nations still rank among the world’s most prosperous and efficient.
Back home, Nigeria’s political landscape has never been short of drama. But in recent times, few stories rival what is unfolding in Rivers State. Not since the PDP’s era have we witnessed a sitting governor suspended and later reinstated in such controversial circumstances. The current Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, was suspended for six months – an act that remains hotly debated – during the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The conflict stemmed from his fallout with his political benefactor and predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Their once-close alliance collapsed into an intense political feud that gripped national attention. There is a popular saying: “You do not bite the finger that fed you.” But one must also ask – if that finger turns to be unwanted or felt oppressive, should one still serve it blindly?
These are the kinds of questions Nigerian citizens must begin to ask. Shouldn’t good governance matter more than loyalty to a political godfather or surrogate leadership?
Having completed his six-month suspension, Governor Fubara’s return to office appears to have cleansed him of political blame and renewed his public perception. He now commands full authority, positioned to rebuild and redefine Rivers State’s governance. If he plays his cards right, he could establish himself as one of Nigeria’s most transformational leaders.
To do so, he must maintain accountability and surround himself with a competent, honest team – advisers and specialists grounded in modern technology, governance innovation, and strategic planning. With Rivers State’s enormous human and financial resources, he possesses the means to elevate the state’s development and enhance the welfare of its people.
In Nigerian politics, history has shown that governors can deliver their states to the opposition even while remaining in their parties. However, a dangerous trend of political defection continues to weaken voter trust. When elected officials cross to opposition parties mid-tenure, they effectively nullify the mandate given by their people. A fairer system would require such officeholders to vacate their seats and allow the next ranking member of the original party to step in until a by-election is held – a principle that would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and empower INEC to act more decisively.
Furthermore, every governor should be evaluated at the end of their tenure, not flattered during it. In advanced democracies, leaders are judged by the number of institutions, projects, and communities that bear their legacy after office – not by the awards they collect while still serving. True recognition should come from measurable achievements, not political favours. The culture of showering serving officials with honorary titles and awards for merely performing their statutory duties erodes dignity and accountability. It would be refreshing to see public officers politely decline such premature honours and instead focus on delivering sincere governance.
To commend honest service within available resources is noble; to decorate mediocrity is corruption disguised as celebration.
As for Governor Fubara, fortune has clearly favoured him. His reinstatement is both a gift and a test. Governance and legitimacy have been returned to him on a platter of gold. Whether he uses this rare second chance to build a lasting legacy or squander it in political battles will define not just his career, but also the future of Rivers State.
Luck is on his side — may wisdom follow.
