Nigeria has recorded another milestone in technology-driven education with the launch of the Naija Drone Soccer League, the country’s first-ever competitive drone soccer league for senior secondary school students.
The initiative, officially unveiled in Abuja on May 19, 2026, is aimed at combining STEM education, e-sports, and innovation to prepare Nigerian youths for opportunities in emerging technology sectors.
According to the organisers, the league is designed to expose students to practical skills in aerospace, aeronautics, aviation technology, engineering, robotics, teamwork, and strategic thinking through structured drone-soccer competitions.
The organisers described drone soccer as more than just a recreational activity, noting that it serves as a platform for nurturing future innovators and technology leaders.
The league will feature nationwide competitions involving senior secondary school students, with regional qualifiers expected to culminate in a national championship.
As part of the initiative, participating schools will receive drone-soccer kits, technical training, and support aimed at helping students gain hands-on experience in drone technology and robotics.
The organisers also disclosed plans for teacher training and school capacity-building programmes to ensure sustainability and wider adoption of drone technology education across the country.
Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, the league management said the programme was established to position Nigerian students for success in a rapidly evolving technology-driven global economy.
“Drone soccer is more than a sport; it is a training ground for the future. Through this league, we are building a generation of innovators who will shape Nigeria’s future in technology, aviation, and engineering,” the organisers stated.
The Naija Drone Soccer League has also called on secondary schools across Nigeria to register for the inaugural season, assuring early participants of priority onboarding, technical support, and national visibility.
Corporate organisations, development partners, and stakeholders were equally invited to partner with the initiative to promote youth empowerment, STEM education advancement, and the growth of Nigeria’s emerging drone and robotics ecosystem.
According to the organisers, the league is expected to serve as a major platform for discovering and developing future engineers, innovators, and technology professionals from Nigeria’s growing youth population.
The league further noted that it aims to create sustainable pathways for students into global technology and aviation industries through structured competitions and innovation-driven learning opportunities.
