Nigeria has taken a decisive step onto the global stage in the fight against misinformation with the launch of the world’s first International Media and Information Literacy Institute, a landmark initiative designed to reshape how societies engage with information in the digital age.
The institute, established by UNESCO in partnership with the Federal Government, was inaugurated at the National Open University of Nigeria, positioning the country as a central hub for advancing media literacy, research, and policy innovation.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Mariya Gabriel described the initiative as a historic breakthrough with far-reaching implications for Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.
She noted that the institute would drive efforts to strengthen critical thinking and empower citizens to navigate the rapidly expanding information landscape, where distinguishing credible content from misinformation has become increasingly complex.
“IMILI will serve as a global hub for research, capacity development, policy support and innovation in Media and Information Literacy,” Gabriel said, adding that the centre would equip governments, educators, media professionals and young people with practical tools to counter misinformation and actively participate in democratic processes.
She emphasised that the institute’s establishment comes at a critical time when the sheer volume of information particularly across digital platforms demands more sophisticated skills to interpret, verify and responsibly use content.
The inauguration drew high-level participation from key government officials, including George Akume, Mohammed Idris Malagi, Suwaiba Ahmad, and Uduma Uduma, underscoring the strategic importance of the initiative to national development and information governance.
The institute is expected to anchor global collaboration, drive policy frameworks, and build capacity across sectors, reinforcing Nigeria’s role in shaping the future of informed and resilient societies.
