Nigeria has moved to strengthen its defence and security partnership with China as the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, leads a high-level delegation to Beijing to accelerate military modernisation and expand local defence production.
The visit focuses on enhancing bilateral cooperation, advancing technology transfer and strengthening the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to improve the country’s defence manufacturing capacity.
“Our focus is clear: we are committed to partnerships that do not just make Nigeria a consumer, but an active producer. Through DICON, we will expand local production lines, drive technology transfer, and achieve sustainable self-reliance in defence manufacturing to secure our nation,” the Minister said during a visit to the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC).
The delegation also held strategic talks with the leadership of China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), where discussions centred on technology transfer, technical capacity building and establishing joint production lines in Nigeria.
At the Nigerian Embassy in Beijing, Ambassador Lt. General Abdulrahman Dambazau (Rtd) described the visit as a significant step in strengthening the strategic relationship between Nigeria and China, pledging the Embassy’s full support throughout the mission.
Beyond defence procurement, analysts say the partnership could support local manufacturing, skills development and industrial growth while helping Nigeria reduce dependence on imported military equipment. For China, the collaboration further strengthens ties with one of Africa’s leading economies and regional security partners.
With Nigeria continuing to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats, the government’s focus on modern technology, artificial intelligence and indigenous defence production reflects a broader strategy to build a more self-reliant and technologically advanced Armed Forces.
The Ministry of Defence says the visit is expected to deliver both immediate and long-term benefits through capability enhancement, equipment modernisation, stronger logistics, industrial development and deeper bilateral relations between Nigeria and China.
