The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to leveraging space-based technology to strengthen disaster risk management, early warning systems, preparedness, and emergency response across Nigeria.
Umar made the commitment on Thursday while receiving a delegation from the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) at NEMA’s headquarters in Abuja.
She noted that the increasing frequency and intensity of disasters, particularly floods, underscore the urgent need to adopt innovative technologies that can improve disaster prediction, preparedness, and response.
The NEMA Director-General called for deeper collaboration with UNOOSA to enhance the agency’s capacity to deploy space-based solutions in disaster risk reduction and emergency management.
According to her, stronger partnerships with international organisations will enable Nigeria to harness advanced technologies to better protect lives, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure from the growing impact of disasters.
Leader of the UNOOSA delegation, Mr. Jumpei Takami, said the visit was to appreciate NEMA for its continued support in implementing the UNOOSA Digital Twin Project, currently being piloted in Lagos State.
Takami explained that the Digital Twin Project combines geospatial technologies with digital modelling to improve disaster preparedness, risk assessment, and emergency response by providing more accurate data and simulations for decision-making.
He expressed confidence that the project would strengthen Nigeria’s disaster management capabilities and serve as a model for the wider application of space-based technologies in emergency management.
The meeting also reaffirmed the commitment of NEMA, UNOOSA, and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to deepen collaboration in promoting the use of space technology to build Nigeria’s resilience to disasters and enhance the country’s capacity to anticipate, mitigate, and respond to emergencies.
