The controversy surrounding Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji’s academic credentials has taken a new turn. The Office of the Registrar, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has confirmed that Chief Uche Nnaji Nwakabia was admitted to the university in 1981 and graduated in 1985.
This confirmation was made in a letter dated December 21, 2023, responding to inquiries from People Gazette. The Minister’s office has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, saying that the Minister’s academic records are a matter of public record and can be verified through the appropriate channels.
The Minister’s office has also called on the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Ortuanya, to publish a statement reconciling any contradictory claims and uphold the integrity of the university. The statement accused Prof. Ortuanya of allowing himself to be used as a political tool by the PDP in Enugu State, dragging the name of the prestigious university through the mud.
The Minister’s office also accused Mr. Chinagorom Ugwu of Premium Times of rushing to the story without verifying facts, a “glaring failure of journalistic responsibility”. The Minister’s office has called for a higher standard of journalism and urged the public to exercise caution and discernment when consuming information.
The Minister’s office has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, saying that the Minister’s academic credentials and qualifications are a testament to his hard work and dedication. The statement concluded by saying that “official records don’t lie. Politics does.”
The hashtag #stopthehatchetjob and #hatchetjobexposed have been trending on social media, with many people showing their support for the Minister and calling for an end to what they see as politically motivated attacks.
