A fresh wave of political realignment may be underway ahead of Nigeria’s next electoral cycle, following the defection of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the move as a “game changer,” noting that it reflects a growing coalition of political actors seeking an alternative platform to reshape Nigeria’s future.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Abdullahi said Kwankwaso’s entry into the party had already triggered a noticeable spike in membership registrations on the ADC’s digital platform within 24 hours—an indication, he said, of rising public interest in the party.
He argued that the former governor’s defection underscores a broader sentiment among Nigerians that the country requires a new political direction anchored on responsive leadership and grassroots engagement.
“Senator Kwankwaso’s decision mirrors the mood of many Nigerians who are increasingly seeking leadership that understands and addresses everyday challenges,” Abdullahi stated.
He highlighted Kwankwaso’s governance experience and political base as key assets, adding that his ability to mobilise support across regions could strengthen the party’s expanding coalition. According to him, the former presidential candidate has also urged members of his political movement to align with the ADC, further consolidating its support base.
The defection event drew prominent figures within the party, including National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, alongside members of the National Working Committee.
Also in attendance were notable political heavyweights such as former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi—a presence Abdullahi said reflects growing unity and momentum within the party.
He maintained that the surge in new registrations within a short period signals that more Nigerians are gravitating toward what he described as a credible alternative platform.
“ADC represents more than a political party; it embodies a collective resolve to build a nation where citizens can live with dignity, access opportunities, and trust public institutions,” Abdullahi added.
