Ceremony at UN Headquarters marks formal start of diplomatic duties

Nigeria’s newly appointed Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has formally presented his letter of credence to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, marking his official assumption of office.
The ceremony, which took place at the United Nations Secretariat, is a key diplomatic protocol that confirms Ibrahim’s authority to represent Nigeria at the global body.
With the presentation of his credentials, Ibrahim is now fully accredited as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Nations. The role positions him as the country’s chief representative in all UN engagements, including sessions of the General Assembly and other high-level meetings.

As Permanent Representative, he is expected to articulate Nigeria’s positions on critical global issues such as international peace and security, economic development, and climate action, while also strengthening the country’s diplomatic influence within the multilateral system.
Nigeria has maintained an active presence at the United Nations since gaining independence in 1960, contributing to peacekeeping missions and international policy discussions.

Ibrahim’s accreditation signals the formal beginning of his diplomatic responsibilities as Nigeria seeks to deepen its engagement on the global stage.
