The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have agreed on a one-time verification system for candidates’ West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) O’Level results as part of efforts to simplify the admission process into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Under the new arrangement, candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions whose admissions are regulated and coordinated by JAMB will be required to verify their WAEC results only once through the JAMB-provided Verification Service.
JAMB and WAEC announced the resolutions in a joint statement following a series of meetings and consultations on the implementation of the new result verification policy.
According to the two examination and admission bodies, candidates will pay a one-off fee of ₦4,000 for the verification of their WASSCE O’Level results.
The payment, they stressed, is to be made through the specified verification platform and not through the tertiary institution to which the candidate is seeking admission.
The bodies further directed tertiary institutions to use the verified results made available by JAMB for screening, admission processing and other related administrative purposes.
Consequently, candidates who have successfully completed the verification will not be required to pay another verification fee to their preferred institutions.
WAEC has also authorised JAMB to share the outcome of the verification exercise with relevant tertiary institutions for admission-related purposes.
The new arrangement is expected to eliminate repeated verification of the same academic credentials, as candidates will be able to use a successfully verified result for multiple admission-related purposes.
JAMB and WAEC said the initiative would significantly reduce the stress and financial burden associated with repeated visits to tertiary institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres.
Candidates will be able to initiate the verification process from the comfort of their homes or any internet-enabled location.
The two bodies therefore encouraged candidates to take advantage of the new system by verifying their WASSCE O’Level results through the JAMB-provided Verification Service once, with the assurance that the verified outcome would subsequently be made available to the relevant institutions.
The collaboration between JAMB and WAEC, the statement said, is aimed at putting candidates’ interests at the centre of the admission process by reducing unnecessary costs, eliminating duplication and making the verification of academic credentials more convenient.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen the integrity and security of candidates’ academic records while promoting a more efficient and seamless admission process across Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The statement was jointly issued by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
