The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dispelled rumours circulating online about the alleged demise of its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu. The story, which went viral on some platforms, claimed that the Chairman passed away in London after a brief illness. However, INEC’s Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser has categorically refuted the claims, stating: “Please ignore the story. He’s hale and hearty.”
This clarification comes amidst growing concerns about the misuse of digital platforms to spread false information. Not only is the report untrue, but evidence also points to the fact that Professor Yakubu was actively engaged in professional duties abroad during the period of these baseless rumours. He was notably in Ghana a few days ago, participating in discussions regarding the country’s presidential elections, demonstrating his belief and commitment to promoting democracy and electoral integrity across Africa.
The viral report highlights the alarming trend of fake news, especially concerning public figures. Such misinformation can cause unnecessary panic and confusion, undermining trust in public institutions and the individuals who lead them. Attempts to destabilise public trust through falsehoods are not only unethical but also counterproductive to national unity.
In today’s digital age, it is imperative for the public to verify the authenticity of information before sharing it. Media platforms also bear the responsibility of fact-checking content to avoid amplifying false narratives. INEC’s swift response to this rumour serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate reporting and the need to counter the spread of misinformation.
