Imperial College London hosts the 2nd group of secondary school students from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria on 10th Sept 2024.
The 2nd group of Akwa Ibom State student Educational exchange tour delegation to the United Kingdom was hosted by Dr Sunday Popo-Ola at Imperial College London. The visit was led by Comrade Ini Ememobong Commissioner for Information and Mrs Idongesit Etiebet, Commissioner for Education of Akwa Ibom State.
20 Senior Secondary School (SSS) students, along with their minders, teachers, principals and staff of the state’s Ministries of Education and Information participated in a *STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Taster session* and a comprehensive campus tour of the prestigious and 2nd best university in the world.
The students engaged in various science and engineering workshop, which provided them with hands-on experience and enriched their understanding of key STEM concepts. This opportunity allowed them to broaden their knowledge and develop practical and 21st-century skills, including *Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication*
These are the skills that will offer them valuable insights into potential opportunity for studying STEM subjects at UK’s universities and enchance their future careers prospect in these fields.
Role model talks were given by Engr. Elizabeth Adeniyi, Ms Felicity Okolo, Mr Terry Uguma, Yemi Soile, and Azu Godson. All told their story and encouraged the students to work hard in other to achieve their potential in life.
The visit by the 39 students is an eye-opener for the students and staff from Akwa Ibom State, and we encourage other states in Nigeria to do something similar in raising the educational aspiration of their students.
We thank HE Umo Eno, Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State for giving these students the opportunity to visit the UK and a taster workshop at Imperial College London and other Universities.
