The Nigeria Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun on monday highlighted the essential role that lawyers play in enhancing national security.
IGP Egbetokun who stated this during a celebratory reception of newly called-to- Bar Lawyers marking their successful completion of the Nigerian Law School urged them to do everything possible to make sure that they bring their knowledge to making policing better in the country.
Welcoming the graduates, Egbetokun emphasized that their achievements represent more than personal milestones; “they are fundamental assets to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation as a whole. “Today, we are not only recognizing personal success; we are celebrating an achievement that strengthens the Nigeria Police Force,”
The IGP noted that policing requires not only courage but also profound legal knowledge. “Every action we take must be grounded in the law. Every power we exercise must be backed by the law,” he stressed, explaining that the role of lawyers within the Force extends beyond courtroom representation to becoming custodians of legal wisdom and integrity. He urged the new lawyers to actively apply their legal knowledge to serve the people of Nigeria diligently.
Egbetokun who used the medium to announce the elevation of the Legal Section to the Force Directorate of Legal Services, now commanded by an Assistant Inspector-General of Police says the new lawyers should see the transformation as strategic, reinforcing the need for sharper legal direction within the Force.
“The Directorate must now deliver watertight prosecutions and protect the Force against legal vulnerabilities,” he declared, outlining the critical responsibilities that lie ahead for the new legal officers.
In his charge to the young officers, IGP Egbetokun highlighted the necessity of integrity and accountability in their roles.
“The Nigeria Police Force does not need lawyers in uniform for decoration,” he stated. “We need officers who add value… who will defend this institution with skill, courage, and integrity.” He challenged them to ensure that prosecutions are thorough and professional, maintaining high standards of conduct that reflect the values of the Force.
As Nigeria continues to confront various security challenges, the incorporation of legally sound officers within the police ranks is seen as vital. Their contributions are poised to enhance law enforcement’s capacity to uphold justice and protect citizens, signifying a transformative step towards integrating legal rigor into policing.
The IGP’s address resonated with the theme of national security, urging the newly called lawyers to remain vigilant and dedicated to their duties, thereby reinforcing the vital connection between legal expertise and effective law enforcement.
