Sadiq Khan has been criticised for choosing to place the burden of recovery on Londoners with his council tax rise today.

Shaun Bailey has pledged to reverse the council tax rise as mayor, and to cut Khan’s wasteful spending at City Hall and TfL in order to fund London’s recovery.

Khan’s Labour has pushed through his 10% council tax rise today, despite public opposition to the plan and right as people and businesses need to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

To date, 75,000 people have signed Shaun Bailey’s petition for Khan to reverse the tax hike.

The tax rise will go ahead, despite a credible alternative plan from the GLA conservatives. The plan would have protected London’s services and found savings in Khan’s ballooning PR departments and City hall bureaucracy.

Shaun Bailey’s plan for corporate sponsorship of tube lines could raise £100 million per year.

Shaun Bailey, Conservative Candidate for London Mayor, said:

“Since 2016, Sadiq Khan has wasted £9.65bn at TfL. Now he’s forcing Londoners to pay for it by raising his share of council tax by 10%. In fact, by the time Sadiq Khan’s term ends, he will have raised his share of council tax by 31%.

As demonstrated by today’s budget, this is Sadiq’s decision. And his alone.

I know how it feels to live life from pay check to pay check. And I know how much harder this will make life for ordinary families.

At a time when many are struggling to make ends meet, the Mayor should be doing everything he can to support them — not raising their cost of living.

So as Mayor, I’ll reverse his hike on day one and save every London household £307.
