In a significant development following the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mr. Mene Ogidi, the case has now been formally handed over to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for thorough investigation and prosecution.
This decision comes as part of an ongoing commitment by the Nigeria Police Force to uphold justice and transparency in the wake of public outcry surrounding the incident.
Parading the dismissed police officers in Abuja, The Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Placid says Mr. Ogidi was shot and killed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu after being apprehended for allegedly receiving a parcel that contained a fabricated Beretta pistol and live ammunition.
While throwing more light into the Tragic Incident, DCP Placid said the events unfolded when citizens, who witnessed the delivery, executed a citizen’s arrest and subsequently contacted the police. ASP Nuhu and his team arrived at the scene, where Mr. Ogidi was unarmed and already detained when he was shot.
In his words, ” On 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State, the deceased, Mr. Mene Ogidi, received a parcel from a friend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, delivered to him by a driver.
After collection, he proceeded to a motor park to waybill the parcel to Sapele, with the name, address, and phone number of the intended receiver written on it.
” The parcel was searched and found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm live ammunition.
Citizens who witnessed this effected a citizen’s arrest of the deceased and subsequently contacted the police.
ASP Nuhu and members of his team responded and arrived at the scene. The suspect was formally handed over to ASP Nuhu as team lead.
At that point, rather than follow established police rules of engagement and standard operational procedures, ASP Nuhu shot and killed the unarmed, already-apprehended suspect.
In response to the gravity of the situation, the Inspector-General of Police directed an immediate inquiry by the Police Monitoring Unit. This investigation revealed that ASP Nuhu’s actions constituted professional misconduct and an unlawful use of force, leading to the tragic death of Mr. Ogidi.
In his words, DCP Placid says “It is important to emphasize that no criminal suspicion, however serious, justifies extra-judicial actions,”
“Every suspect is entitled to due process under the law.”
” In the wake of the findings, ASP Nuhu and three other officers involved in the incident have been arrested and face potential criminal charges. Internal disciplinary measures have been finalized, resulting in their recommendations for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force, as confirmed by the Police Service Commission.
The Force Spokesman says The case file has now been submitted to the Attorney General’s office, which will lead the prosecution process. The police force has pledged to fully cooperate with the Attorney General’s office in ensuring thorough legal accountability.
As the investigation moves forward, the community continues to seek answers and justice for the loss of Mr. Ogidi, highlighting the need for systemic reforms within law enforcement to prevent such occurrences in the future.
