Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Wednesday took custody of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, shortly after proceedings at the Federal High Court , where he appeared for a hearing on his bail application in an ongoing corruption trial.
El-Rufai had just concluded proceedings relating to his bail application in a case instituted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) when DSS operatives escorted him into a waiting vehicle and drove away, reportedly heading to Abuja.
There was a heavy security presence around the court premises before the hearing, a development that had fueled speculation that the former governor might be taken into custody immediately after the proceedings.
The former governor arrived at the court at about 9:05 a.m. in a Hilux van, drawing attention from security personnel, lawyers and observers at the court complex.
Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, lead defence counsel, Oluwole Iyamu (SAN), confirmed that the court had adjourned ruling on the bail application to April 14.
“The bail application was argued and responded to, and the ruling has been fixed for April 14,” he said.
