The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has called on Nigerian children and youths to cultivate the habit of reading as a pathway to self-development, leadership, and national progress.
Prof. Anunobi made the call in a goodwill message to commemorate the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, where she congratulated Nigerian children on the annual event dedicated to celebrating their innocence, talents, and future potential.
She described reading as a powerful tool for empowerment, critical thinking, and lifelong learning, urging young Nigerians to embrace books as companions for personal growth and national transformation.
“Reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity, and leadership,” she said. “When you read, you equip yourself with the ideas, skills, and confidence to shape your future and contribute meaningfully to our country. Let this Children’s Day remind us that every great leader, inventor, and changemaker started with a book.”
The National Librarian also commended the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the educational reforms being championed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, noting that the initiatives are expanding access to quality education and learning opportunities across the country.
According to her, the Federal Government’s policies are helping to create an inclusive system where every Nigerian child, regardless of background or location, can access both formal and non-formal education needed to achieve their aspirations.
Prof. Anunobi further encouraged young Nigerians to take advantage of the programmes and facilities provided by the National Library of Nigeria, including its nationwide network of literacy centres, book clubs, and digital learning resources.
She stressed the importance of reading Nigerian books and materials that reflect the nation’s history, culture, languages, heroes, and achievements, adding that such knowledge would help youths better understand their identity and prepare for future responsibilities.
“The National Library of Nigeria remains committed to being a safe, accessible, and inspiring space for learning. Through our centres and digital platforms, we are bringing books, knowledge, and opportunities closer to you. I urge you to visit us, join a book club, and read widely, especially Nigerian content that tells your story,” she added.
Prof. Anunobi reaffirmed the commitment of the National Library of Nigeria to promoting reading culture and lifelong learning in line with national development priorities and the institution’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan.
She also called on parents, teachers, community leaders, and stakeholders to support efforts aimed at nurturing a generation of informed, enlightened, and productive young Nigerians.
The statement was signed by Vershima Orvell-Dio, Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, National Library of Nigeria, Abuja.
