Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been eliminated from the race for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.

The defeat at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, also ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The WAFU Zone B final carried significant importance, with the winner securing the region’s ticket to the 2027 U-20 AFCON, which will serve as the qualifying tournament for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Burkina Faso seized the initiative from the opening whistle, scoring three times within the first 15 minutes to put the Flying Eagles under immense pressure.

Nigeria struggled to contain the Young Stallions’ attacking threat and went into the break facing a huge deficit.

Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side tried to stage a comeback after the interval but failed to produce the response needed to overturn the damage.

Burkina Faso added another goal to complete a convincing 4-1 victory, while Nigeria’s consolation goal could not alter the outcome.

The defeat compounded Nigeria’s disappointment after Burkina Faso had already beaten the Flying Eagles 2-0 in the group stage.

Nigeria went into the final hoping to avenge that earlier defeat, but the Young Stallions once again proved superior when the stakes were highest.

The Flying Eagles had booked their place in the final after a dramatic semi-final victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire.

The encounter ended 2-2 after regulation time before Nigeria edged the hosts 4-3 on penalties to secure their place in the championship decider.

Burkina Faso, meanwhile, maintained its unbeaten run by defeating Niger 2-0 in the other semi-final.

The Young Stallions completed their impressive campaign by defeating Nigeria 4-1 in the final to lift the WAFU Zone B title and secure qualification for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.

For Nigeria, the defeat represents a major setback.

The Flying Eagles, seven-time winners of the U-20 AFCON, will now miss the 2027 continental tournament and lose the opportunity to qualify for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup through the competition.
