British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been taken to hospital following a serious road traffic accident in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria, in which two people were confirmed dead, according to the Ogun State Police Command.
In a statement issued on Sunday, police said the crash involved multiple victims, adding that Joshua and others who sustained injuries were transported to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention. Details surrounding the circumstances of the accident remain limited, and authorities say investigations are ongoing.
The incident comes just weeks after Joshua’s high-profile return to winning form in the ring, a victory that reignited global conversations about the former two-time heavyweight champion’s career resurgence. Following that win, Joshua travelled to Nigeria for the Christmas holidays, where he has been spending time with family and reconnecting with his roots.
Joshua, one of the most recognisable figures in global boxing, has frequently spoken about his strong ties to Nigeria and has in recent years increased his presence in the country, particularly during festive periods.
Police confirmed fatalities at the scene but did not immediately release the identities of the deceased. “Two persons were confirmed dead in the crash,” the statement said, without clarifying whether they were occupants of the same vehicle as Joshua or of another vehicle involved.
There has been no official statement yet from Joshua or his management team regarding his condition. However, police sources described his injuries as non-fatal.
News of the accident has triggered an outpouring of concern from fans across Nigeria, the UK and the global boxing community, many of whom had been celebrating his recent sporting success and festive visit.
Authorities have urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work and cautioned against speculation as more details emerge.
This is a developing story.
