By Amb. Hussaini Coomassie
As Nigeria continues to confront increasingly complex security challenges—including terrorism, banditry, transnational organized crime, arms smuggling, human trafficking, and irregular migration—it has become imperative to provide all frontline security agencies with the operational tools and institutional support necessary to discharge their responsibilities effectively.
One issue deserving urgent attention is the reported restriction on the use of camouflage uniforms by officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), despite their active participation in border patrol operations, joint security missions, and deployments to high-risk and conflict-prone areas.

This raises an important question: Why should a frontline security agency that regularly participates in joint operations against criminal and terrorist elements be denied the use of tactical field uniforms designed for such hazardous assignments?
Camouflage uniforms are far more than items of clothing. Across military and law enforcement organizations worldwide, they serve important operational purposes. They enhance concealment where appropriate, provide a distinct operational identity, foster unit cohesion, strengthen morale, and reinforce the confidence and professionalism of personnel deployed in difficult and dangerous environments.

The Nigeria Immigration Service plays a critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity. Its responsibilities include securing the nation’s borders, preventing illegal migration, combating human trafficking, disrupting transnational criminal networks, and supporting national security operations. These duties often require officers to operate in remote border communities, forests, and other high-risk environments alongside sister security agencies.
Similarly, agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps undertake specialised operational assignments that may warrant the use of appropriate tactical field uniforms during approved operations.

In many countries—including several of Nigeria’s neighbours—immigration and border security personnel wear camouflage or other tactical operational uniforms while carrying out border security missions. As security threats continue to evolve across the region, Nigeria should continually assess whether its operational policies remain aligned with current realities and the needs of frontline personnel.
Against this background, I respectfully appeal to the National Security Adviser, ****, to facilitate a comprehensive review of the current policy governing the use of camouflage uniforms by the Nigeria Immigration Service and other eligible frontline security agencies engaged in specialised operational duties.
This appeal is not about inter-agency rivalry, symbolism, or uniform politics. Rather, it is about enhancing operational effectiveness, strengthening institutional identity, improving officer morale, and supporting those who risk their lives daily in defence of Nigeria’s borders and national security.
When officers are deployed to dangerous operational environments, they deserve equipment, protective gear, and operational uniforms that are appropriate for the tasks they are expected to perform. Supporting frontline personnel in this manner contributes not only to their confidence and welfare but also to the overall effectiveness of the nation’s security architecture.
A well-equipped officer is a more confident officer.
A confident officer is better positioned to perform effectively.
And a well-supported security agency is better equipped to protect the nation.
Nigeria’s border security institutions deserve every legitimate support required to safeguard our territorial integrity and national security.
