Former Governnor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani and Lateef Ajijola are out of the Senatorial race following the decision of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to expel them from the party.
Senator Nnamani is seeking re-election to Senate from Enugu East while Mr Ajijola is seeking to contest election in Ekiti Central Senatorial District.
Other candidates affected by the decision of the party are the son of Chief Ayodele Fayose, former Ekiti State Governor, John Fayose, and Olalere Olayinka (Ekiti Central II), Akerele Oluyinka (Ekiti North I), and Emiola Jennifer (Ekiti South II) who are contesting for the House of Representatives tickets on the platform of the PDP, which had hitherto nominated them as its candidates before their suspension and eventual expulsion.
Based on the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , Nnamani, Ajijola, Fayose, Lere Olayinka, Akerele and Eniola are not eligible to participate in the National Assembly Election.
Section 65 (2) (b) says “A person shall be qualified for election under subsection (1) of this section if: he is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that party.
The Peoples Democratic Party in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, , Debo Ologunagba, said, “The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party at its 566th meeting today, Friday, February 10, 2023, approved the expulsion of the following individuals from the Party for anti-Party activities and other grave offences in violation of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).
“The expulsion takes effect from today, Friday, February 10, 2023. The decision of the NWC is sequel to the recommendation of the National Disciplinary Committee and pursuant to Sections 58 and 59 (1)(g) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017),” PDP’s statement added.
“The PDP charges all members of our Party across the country to remain united and focused on the mission of our Party to Rescue, Rebuild, and Redirect our nation from misrule,”
