Gbajabiamila Launches Free Transport Scheme for Students and the Elderly in Lagos
In a landmark initiative to ease the financial burden of transportation for vulnerable groups, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has launched a free bus ride scheme in Lagos targeted at students and elderly citizens.
The scheme, which aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, was unveiled at a ceremony held at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) Yard in Oshodi, Lagos. The pilot phase will see over 50 buses deployed across various routes in the state.
Gbajabiamila emphasised that the programme aims to support students and the elderly, many of whom are struggling with the high cost of living and transportation.
“This initiative is designed to cushion the effects of the current economic challenges on our people. We understand that students and senior citizens are among the most affected groups. Providing them with free transportation is a practical step in alleviating some of their burdens,” he stated.
He added: “This is a Renewed Hope Agenda initiative – an agenda of compassion, of sensitivity to the plight of the people. We must bridge the gap between government policy and the everyday challenges faced by the average Nigerian.”
Beneficiaries include students of public tertiary institutions and elderly residents aged 70 and above. They are required to present valid means of identification, such as school IDs or national identity cards, to access the free service.
While acknowledging the difficulties faced by Nigerians due to subsidy removal and other economic reforms, Gbajabiamila noted that the federal government remains committed to implementing measures that bring relief and development.
“We are aware of the difficulties our people are facing, but this administration is focused on building a stronger, more inclusive economy. Initiatives like this are part of a larger effort to ensure no one is left behind,” he said.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation and other dignitaries praised the effort, calling it a timely intervention that directly benefits those in need.
The scheme is expected to expand in future phases, with collaboration from other agencies and stakeholders to ensure its success and sustainability.
