Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) – By Tolu Ogunlesi
This Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) is one of the projects that Nigeria and Niger (and Algeria) are collaborating on—a gas pipeline running through the Sahara Desert to supply Europe.
There’s a competitor project, the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP), running offshore (Gulf of Guinea), past a dozen countries to serve Europe.
I have my fingers crossed on which one will be completed first.
Both will take several years of construction and cost several billions of dollars.
The offshore one will be more expensive but also more secure and immune to the security issues in the Sahel.
Nigerian Gas and existing Infra are critical to both pipelines:
The NMGP will very likely be an extension to the existing ECOWAS-conceived West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), which takes off in Nigeria’s Niger Delta and currently runs to Ghana through Benin and Togo.
The TSGP will be an extension of the AKK Gas Pipeline, a 614km Nigerian gas project (one of Buhari’s legacy projects) nearing completion.
