Fresh debate over the academic credentials of President Bola Tinubu took centre stage on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, as representatives of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) traded arguments over allegations relating to the President’s educational records.

The discussion comes amid renewed political scrutiny of President Tinubu’s academic background ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties continuing to raise questions over his educational qualifications, while the ruling APC dismisses the claims as politically motivated.

Speaking during the programme, lawyer and ADC member, Kalu Kalu, argued that no court, either in Nigeria or abroad, had ruled on the substantive allegations of forgery or perjury made against the President.

“There is no judgment of any court anywhere in Nigeria, or even outside the shores of Nigeria, that has decided on the merit of the issue of the alleged forgery and perjury by Ahmed Tinubu,” Kalu said.

He maintained that the President could put the controversy to rest by publicly presenting his academic certificates.

“If the President says it is merely an accusation, let him come out and tell Nigerians, ‘This is my primary school certificate. This is my secondary school certificate,’” he stated.

During the programme, the host, Seun Okinbaloye, also sought clarification from former APC National Legal Adviser, Babatunde Ogala (SAN), on the President’s educational background.

Responding, Ogala declined to speak on behalf of President Tinubu, saying the President was best placed to answer questions relating to his personal records.

“The President will answer your questions when you ask him,” Ogala said.

When asked about Tinubu’s career before his election to the Senate and later as Governor of Lagos State, the senior lawyer dismissed the allegations raised by the opposition, describing them as part of routine political contestation.

“The opposition wants to win votes, so they will cook up all kinds of stories,” he said.

The exchange reflects the increasingly charged political atmosphere as parties begin positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, with issues surrounding President Tinubu’s academic credentials once again emerging as a point of contention between the ruling APC and opposition figures.

While the opposition insists questions remain unanswered, the APC maintains that the allegations are politically driven and have no legal basis. No new judicial determination on the matter was presented during the televised discussion.
