President Bola Tinubu on Thursday received the outgoing President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, at the State House in Abuja.

Photographs released by the State House media office showed Touray arriving at the Presidential Villa alongside the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye.

Although details of the closed-door meeting were not immediately disclosed, the visit came just weeks before the Gambian diplomat formally concludes his tenure as head of the executive arm of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Touray assumed office as President of the ECOWAS Commission on July 3, 2022, after being unanimously nominated by the Government of The Gambia and endorsed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for the 2022–2026 term.

He succeeded Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, who led the Commission from 2018 to 2022.

Before joining the ECOWAS Commission, Touray served as The Gambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and later as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh. He was relieved of that position in September 2009 before subsequently working with the Islamic Development Bank and later returning to diplomatic service.

The meeting underscored Nigeria’s continued engagement with ECOWAS leadership as the regional bloc prepares for a transition at its executive level amid ongoing efforts to address political, economic and security challenges across West Africa.
