President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Benin Republic’s President-elect, Romuald Wadagni, following his decisive victory at the polls, while signalling a renewed push to deepen strategic ties between both nations.

Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin’s finance minister, secured a commanding mandate in Sunday’s presidential election, winning more than 94 per cent of the vote—an outcome widely seen as a strong endorsement of his economic stewardship and reform agenda.

In a personally signed message, Tinubu described the landslide win as a clear expression of confidence by the Beninese electorate in Wadagni’s leadership and track record in public service. He also commended the people of Benin Republic for what he called a peaceful and credible democratic process.

The Nigerian leader emphasised the enduring historical, cultural and economic bonds between both countries, noting that the transition presents an opportunity to further consolidate bilateral cooperation.

Tinubu pledged that Nigeria would work closely with the incoming administration to strengthen collaboration in key areas, particularly regional security, trade expansion and economic integration within West Africa. He also underscored the importance of sustained engagement through regional blocs such as the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union.

The president wished Wadagni a successful tenure, assuring him of Nigeria’s support in advancing shared priorities aimed at promoting stability, growth and prosperity across the sub-region.

Wadagni is set to succeed outgoing President Patrice Talon after serving in his administration as finance minister.
