Shake-up in Nigeria’s diplomatic leadership as President seeks stronger global engagement and foreign policy efficiency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down to pursue political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

The appointment was disclosed in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, Odumegwu-Ojukwu brings prior experience to the role, having previously served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

In a related development, the President has nominated Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Before his nomination, Enikanolaiye served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations. A career diplomat from Kogi State, he is described as a seasoned public servant with over three decades of experience in Nigeria’s foreign service.

His extensive diplomatic career includes roles as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and postings in key international cities such as Addis Ababa, Belgrade, Ottawa, London, and New Delhi.

President Tinubu said the appointments form part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy framework for greater efficiency, strategic engagement, and stronger global partnerships.

He congratulated the appointees and charged them to advance Nigeria’s national interest through robust economic diplomacy, enhanced regional cooperation, and the protection of Nigerians both at home and abroad.
