Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced a commanding performance to defeat Egypt 6-2 and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Wednesday.
The defending champions bounced back from a shock opening defeat to Malawi to finish second in Group C and keep alive their quest for a record-extending 11th continental title.
Heading into the decisive group fixture, Nigeria needed victory after recovering from their opening setback with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Zambia. Justine Madugu’s side delivered in style, producing their most dominant display of the tournament at the Rabat Olympic Stadium.
Asisat Oshoala gave Nigeria the lead from the penalty spot in the 21st minute before Gift Monday doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time after a fine assist from Rinsola Babajide.
Egypt pulled one back through Nadine Ghazi’s penalty deep into first-half added time to leave the score at 2-1 at the break.
The Super Falcons took complete control after the restart.
Babajide registered her second assist of the night when she set up Uchenna Kanu for Nigeria’s third goal in the 57th minute, while Christy Ucheibe converted another penalty in the 81st minute to make it 4-1.
Ghazi grabbed her second goal for Egypt three minutes later, but Nigeria quickly restored their dominance.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted a third penalty for the Super Falcons before providing the assist for Joy Omewa, who completed the 6-2 rout in stoppage time.
The emphatic victory completed Nigeria’s impressive recovery after the opening 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi, with consecutive victories over Zambia and Egypt earning the Super Falcons six points from three matches.
Despite Nigeria’s convincing win, Malawi topped Group C after edging Zambia 2-1 in the other group fixture. Malawi, Nigeria and Zambia all finished on six points, but Malawi claimed first place on the tiebreak criteria, while Zambia were eliminated. Egypt finished bottom of the group without a point after losing all three matches.
Nigeria will now await their quarter-final opponents as they continue their campaign to retain the WAFCON title in Morocco.
