SHAUN BAILEY: TIER 3 IS A “MISTAKE, WE MUST EXPLORE AN AREA BY AREA APPROACH FOR LONDON AND FOR SCHOOL HOLIDAYS TO BE EXTENDED
Shaun Bailey, London Conservaitive Mayoral Candidate has called for a more targeted approach as the government announced London will be moving into Tier 3. Shaun Bailey has also called for school Christmas holidays to be extended to start a week later in January.
Shaun Bailey is calling for a targeted “area by area” approach which would see areas with a high transmission rate put into Tier 3 restrictions. This would include the Borough of Havering where Shaun Bailey is a resident and has a high transmission rate.
Schools have contributed to the recent rise in infections and Shaun Bailey has today called for the Christmas holiday to be extended in order to break the cycle of transmission and avoid further restrictions.
A formal review of the restrictions was due to take place on Wednesday but has been moved forward to confirm the move from Tier 2 to Tier 3 for London.
When London was plunged into Tier 2 on 30th November. Shaun Bailey called on Sadiq Khan to ensure a plan was published by the Mayor to outline how we will get the capital from Tier 2 to Tier 1 – now the capital has taken a step back and entered Tier 3.
Sadiq Khan has consistently failed to show leadership during the pandemic. He has called for lockdowns and then for 10pm curfews only to perform a u-turn just weeks later. He is now calling for schools to be closed immediately, not allowing families to prepare for the disruption.
Shaun Bailey, Conservative London Mayoral Candidate said:
““London’s population is nearly twice the size of Scotland’s. Yet they have five Tiers and we only have one.
Putting all of London into Tier 3 is a mistake — and I can’t support it. That’s why I’m calling on the government to rethink their decision and take a targeted approach.
For example, I’ve asked ministers to keep schools closed an extra week in January — which is where infections have risen. I’ve also suggested we take an area-by-area approach to Tiers, so that different parts of London are in different categories depending on transmission rates.
Six months from now, when the vaccine is rolled out, infection rates will no longer be such a problem. It’s our duty to make sure mass unemployment isn’t a problem either.”
