Reps, NMDPRA Strengthen Oversight Collaboration in Oil, Gas Sector

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Midstream), Hon. Prince Henry Odianosen Okojie, has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to strengthening legislative oversight and deepening collaboration to enhance efficiency and investment in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Okojie stated this during a meeting with the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Malam Rabiu Abdullahi Umar, at the National Assembly.

The NMDPRA delegation also included the Authority’s Executive Director, Finance and Accounts, Mr. Abiodun Adeniji.

The meeting focused on key issues affecting the midstream petroleum sector, with discussions centred on improving regulatory efficiency, attracting investment, strengthening infrastructure and creating a more sustainable environment for industry growth.

Okojie described the midstream segment as a critical component of Nigeria’s energy value chain, stressing that its efficiency is essential to the country’s economic development and energy security.

He assured the NMDPRA leadership of the committee’s continued support in ensuring that Nigeria’s petroleum regulatory framework remains transparent, effective and attractive to investors.

“As lawmakers, our responsibility is to ensure that Nigeria’s regulatory framework continues to support the growth and development of the oil and gas sector. Through effective oversight, collaboration and shared commitment, we can build a stronger, more efficient and prosperous petroleum sector for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Okojie said.

The lawmaker commended Umar and Adeniji for their contributions to the development of the petroleum industry, noting that the NMDPRA plays a pivotal role in promoting transparency, accountability and operational efficiency across the midstream and downstream segments.

He reiterated the committee’s commitment to providing the legislative support required to advance ongoing reforms aimed at modernising the sector, encouraging innovation and ensuring long-term sustainability.

The meeting also underscored the shared commitment of the National Assembly and the NMDPRA to building a petroleum industry that is competitive, profitable and capable of driving sustainable economic growth.

Participants emphasised the importance of attracting private investment, improving critical infrastructure and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global energy market.

Both parties pledged to strengthen collaboration in advancing reforms that will deepen regulatory effectiveness, boost investor confidence and position the petroleum sector as a major contributor to economic diversification, job creation and national development.
