In a decisive move to overhaul national security operations, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Audi Abubakar, has authorized the nationwide deployment of advanced tactical equipment.
The NSCDC boss, during an annual strategic meeting at the Corps’ National Headquarters, distributed a substantial cache of high-tech equipment to heads of state formations. The move aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, signaling a shift toward technology-driven policing.
The deployment introduces sophisticated tools designed to eliminate operational blind spots in the protection of critical infrastructure. Each state formation received a comprehensive suite of equipment, including:
Aerial & Digital Surveillance: Three drones for aerial monitoring, alongside GPS tracking devices and “situation room connectivity packs” to monitor personnel movements in real time.
Tactical Gear: 100 sets of bulletproof vests and helmets, 200 pairs of combat boots, and specialized night-vision goggles.
Evidence Gathering: Body cameras and pen recorders to ensure transparency and accountability during field operations.
Field Sustainability: Operational backpacks equipped with solar chargers and mini tablets.
“These gadgets are provided to ensure the effective discharge of duties,” Abubakar stated.
“In this new strategic phase, the Corps is deploying advanced technological tools to address insecurity, combat banditry, and tackle illegal mining and logging.”
Addressing the gathering of state commanders, Professor Abubakar whose tenure was recently renewed by President Tinubu described the extension as a call to intensify operational efforts. He noted that his administration has boosted morale by resolving long-standing issues such as unpaid salary arrears and delayed promotions.
However, the Commandant General coupled these welfare improvements with a stern warning, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for indiscipline.
“The deployed equipment must not be diverted for personal or unauthorized use but strictly utilized for official duties,” he warned, adding that severe sanctions await any officer found in violation.
The NSCDC remains the lead agency in protecting Nigeria’s critical national assets and natural resources. Abubakar highlighted recent operational successes as benchmarks for future performance, including: Over 400 illegal refineries destroyed, Numerous arrests and successful prosecutions of smugglers and illegal miners
He added that the newly deployed equipment is expected to scale these achievements, particularly through the Agro Rangers unit, which received 200 specialized uniforms to strengthen the protection of agricultural investments and curb rural insecurity.
The meeting, attended by heads of formations from all 36 states and the FCT, also served as a platform to review the Corps’ operational blueprint for the coming year.
Abubakar emphasized that the future of the NSCDC lies in enhanced intelligence sharing and inter-agency collaboration.
“By integrating real-time data from body cameras and drones into a centralized situation room, the Corps aims to deliver a more coordinated and efficient response to infrastructure vandalism across the federation,” he stated.
