Nigeria’s mixed 4×100m relay team delivered a standout performance at the ongoing World Relay Championship in Botswana, raising strong prospects of securing a place at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China.
The team made up of Favor Ashe, Jennifer Chukwuka-Obi, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Thompson clocked an impressive 40.24 seconds in Heat 1 on Saturday, finishing fourth in their race. The time marks the fastest ever recorded by an African nation in the mixed 4×100m event.
Despite the record-breaking run, Nigeria’s qualification is not yet guaranteed, as final placements will only be confirmed after the conclusion of all three heats. The team’s fate now depends on how their performance ranks against other competing nations.
The World Athletics Championships is scheduled to hold in Beijing from September 11 to 19, 2027, where the mixed 4×100m event is expected to feature some of the fastest relay teams globally.
