Response to Dissolved NIDOE CEC’s Recent Press Statement: Clarifying Misrepresentations and Affirming Legality
Date: November 1, 2024
The legally established Caretaker Committee of Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Europe (NIDOE) addresses misrepresentations in a recent press release issued by the dissolved Central Executive Council (CEC) on October 29, 2024.
The Caretaker Committee clarifies that the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on October 26, 2024, which led to the dissolution of both the CEC and the Electoral Committee (EC), was lawfully convened.
This action was in line with the UK Companies Act 2006 and the NIDOE Constitution, following the CEC’s failure to convene a requested meeting to address concerns from members.
At the EGM, close to 200 strong members attended and over 170 vetted members voted, with over 95% supporting the dissolution due to allegations of mismanagement, constitutional violations, and financial transparency issues.
Following this vote, a seven-member Caretaker Committee was appointed to oversee NIDOE’s operations, manage transparent elections within twelve months, and restore member confidence.
The Committee is empowered by the EGM resolution and NIDOE Constitution to uphold organizational values and democratic processes.
The Committee also counters claims by the dissolved CEC regarding supposed unconstitutional actions by certain chapters, citing the CEC’s attempt to centralize control contrary to NIDOE’s chapter-level governance principles.
The Committee warns that any continued obstruction by the dissolved CEC and EC in transferring NIDOE assets, documents, and authority will lead to legal actions as per the UK Companies Act.
The Caretaker Committee calls on all NIDOE members to support this transitional period aimed at restoring integrity, transparency, and accountability within the organization. It urges former CEC and EC members, including Dr. Bashir Obasekola, to respect the democratic mandate of NIDOE members, fostering unity for an effective, representative NIDOE.
