Career diplomat and ambassador-designate to Algeria dies after illness; buried in Kano amid tributes from government and colleagues

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has announced the death of Ambassador Mohammed Mahmud Lele, a seasoned diplomat who recently served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Ministry said Lele passed away in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, following a protracted illness.
Until his death, Lele had been appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Ambassador-Designate to Algeria, a nomination confirmed by the Nigerian Senate.
Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, the late diplomat graduated with a degree in Economics from Bayero University Kano before joining the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001. Over the course of his career, he served in various diplomatic missions, including postings in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.
The Ministry described Lele as “a dedicated, meticulous and exemplary diplomat” known for his intellectual depth, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
His remains were received in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, alongside senior officials, before being transported for burial.
Ambassador Lele was laid to rest on April 22, 2026, in Kano, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Ministry extended condolences to his family, the government and people of Bauchi State, and the wider diplomatic community, noting that his passing represents a significant loss to Nigeria’s foreign service.
